A reinvented “Oni” design by Master Carver Tegal, inspired by a Balinese Raksasa owner Made D who spent many years living in Japan. “Oni” is an homage to the ancient folklore of Japanese culture. Famed as a hideous supernatural demon with sharp claws and wild hair, much like Raksasa’s of Bali. Oni is believed to be a punisher of evil and greed in the physical and spirit realms. From Hindu origins, these hideous and gigantic creatures represent invincibility or extreme strength. They can shape shift and become invisible to deceive their opponents, celebrated for their fearlessness in guardianship of light and goodwill. In this popular tattoo design, Oni displays enduring strength and courage until death. With eternal power to fight evil, you cannot run or hide from the Oni’s wrath. Legend holds if you commit extreme sin in this lifetime, an Oni will be waiting for your spirit in the afterlife to enslave you in hell. All power holds an equal paradox. Like a Raksasa, the Oni can also represent darkness, symbolizing the abuse of power, to become “strong beyond strong” where greed and ego can shape desires without nobility or conscience. In some regions of Japan, the Oni is celebrated as a symbol of fertility and transformation, while other villages fear the wrath of Oni’s invading their villages as soldiers of destruction by ruling Emperors. This inherent polarization of the Oni’s tireless strength and determination offers us guidance in selfish or selfless intentions when navigating one’s personal or communal powers in the universe.
