“King Rahwana" by Master Carver Wayan K. The powerful Raksasa King "Rahwana of Lanksa"and his flying mount "Wilmana," are the classic super villain antagonists in the famed Hindu epic "Ramayana." "Rahwana" (Roaring) is often depicted as a God of darkness & extremism, spreading black magic and eating humans for breakfast. He represents the epitome of selfish carnal desires, irresponsible use of power, and reckless behavior among Gods. However, Rahwana was a gifted scholar and musician under the guidance of Lord Shiva, where he excelled in Siddha Medicine and Political Science. For his superior knowledge of six Shastras and four Vedas, he was gifted ten heads by his peers. To demonstrate his devotion to Lord Shiva, he cut off one of his heads each year for her until she finally accepted the last remaining head as the truly devoted Rahwana. His pursuits led him to great knowledge, power, and fortune as the ruler of Lanksa, but competing kingdoms brought constant war & conflict. Rahwana quickly became an unstoppable warrior in battle with his army of blood thirsty Raksasa's. It was not until Rama cut off the ears and nose of Rahwana's sister, did the "Ramayana" epic begin. Tales of extremism among Hindu Gods provide us with lessons of caution and care with our Karmic actions, where pettiness and power can run amuck. For Rahwana, what is black or white is in the eye of the beholder. His extreme ambitions in spiritual knowledge and power were mere adaptations in a universe of crazy Gods.
